As Camp comes to an end, I really wanted teams to tap into all we have learned from When Calls The Heart and our favorite teacher. So many lessons to choose from. But ultimately, Hope Valley is about hope, kindness, fun, and community...just to name a few. So enjoy seeing what they learned and shared this week. I will turn the comments over to our judge, Ben Rosenbaum and our special guest judge, Erin Krakow!

Wonderful job everyone! I want to say thank you for letting me enjoy the fruits of your labor all month long. You are all so creative and fun, and I had a great time seeing what you came up with each week. I hope you’ve had a lot of fun yourselves, and that you’ve made many Heartie friends. Have a great rest of your summer (or winter to my Aussies) and I’ll be seeing you all on Twitter!

You Give Love A Plaid Name
Ben: I’m loving the presentation here, even the typography is on point! And the crossover puns are very fun: “A New Hope Valley Zoo” is a real standout. Somebody on the team must have a nice photography setup for miniatures because your pics of the Star Wars figures and Glen are great!
Erin: Big fan of the way you depicted Gowen’s transformation! Interesting Star Wars/WCTH mashup theme!

Sergeant's Riders
Ben: I feel very well informed about your cause, thank you for bringing awareness to DS. What a lovely act of kindness! Coffee for the troops! What an excellent HV upgrade, I don’t know what I would do without indoor plumbing! You brought the old school volcano to the science fair—I love it!
Erin: I have to agree that our modern-day toilets are much nicer than the 1915 “toilet” you have pictured. That volcano science project looks familiar! We had such a “blast” filming that scene!

The WagonErs
Ben: Great details in your article detailing everything going on in your wonderful photos! And boy is there a lot going on! Great job! Nice way of tying your chosen cause into the reason for the petting zoo. And such a fun pictorial history lesson. Your campers may not have the proper instructions for survival in the woods, but they’ll know how to pass the time skipping rocks! Except I think your book is missing a step—“find a body of water and stand at its edge facing it.”🤣
Erin: Very creative photoshop work for the fundraiser photos. I also appreciated the article in Hope Valley Times! Super clear instructions on how to skip rocks!

Lumber Ladies

Ben: Log is back and making me laugh again! Sounds like she may have gotten a little “waterlogged” on the job while shadowing at the winery! I love the use of Gowen’s signature bowler hat in your art. That’s a very useful book for camper’s, but I can see why it’s a nightmare for Log! I’m almost as scared checking out your science fair project🤣
Erin:The section in the camping guide about how to light a fire took me right back to the Season 2 finale! Equal parts morbid and funny that your mascot the log watched the twigs in horror. Beautiful to read how the quotes about Gowen evolved. Nice wood pun! Very interesting reading about Frank the tarantula!

Team PhotoBaumers
Ben: Well, that is a very cuddly looking petting zoo; Hickam would be first in line! ShutterBaum is hard at work at your mercantile! I’m more of a peachy-o’s person myself, but we can agree that gummies in general are dangerously good. Great Gowen art! I’ve seen him as a bit of a Grinch story myself over the seasons. Thanks for bringing awareness to NAMI and #EndTheStigma
Erin: It’s amazing what googley eyes can do to an inanimate object! Such a cute camera! The Gowen/Grinch mashup = clever! I imagine that wood floor was a challenge to remove!!

Hope Valley Fans
Ben: Helping at the pet adoption! Cute and kind! Honey Bunny out doing God’s Business reminds me of the Disney Robin Hood for some reason, which is my favorite Robin Hood. Nice Gowen artwork, but do I detect a heart shape in the face of your devil?! Camping for Dummies would be exactly where I’d have to start my journey to the woods 🤣.
Erin:I love all of the sweet animal photos! I hope those sweet dogs were adopted! You did such a great job comparing the work it took to get the basics in 1910 vs 2018!

Toasty Marshmallow Squad
Ben: “Hope Valley Woman Strong” is my new favorite phrase! Nice pillowcases. Your Gowen artwork is awesome! I love all the different emojis for sale (representing how you’ll feel in a pair of plaids pants I assume?). LOL Hope Valley’s first pool boy. Miss Toasty ended up in a pastry?!?! Good thing it’s the final week🤣.
Erin: I CAN’T BELIEVE MISS TOASTY MELTED!!!!! Love the idea of Pants taking Gowen shopping for a new attitude. Great drawings! Wonderful pillowcases!

Hickam's Secret Service

Ben: That visit to the nursing home looks like so much fun! I bet they were delighted! That convict kangaroo is just about the cutest, reminds me of some doves that got away one time. Secret agent Rip looks like he was a lot of help with his shadowing, nice job!
Erin: Love the knot pun. Those kids’ smiling faces = Heartmelting! Great then & now side-by-sides!

Coal Valley Cuties
Ben: I love formatting the whole thing as a school newspaper! Nice show reference with the circus bringing in the petting zoo, and I’m sure the CVC were very excited/surprised to see all their favorite animals in the pens🤣. Thanks for keeping the streets and parks clean of litter! The customer at the barber holding Mountie Tyrol is too funny to me! Great Gowen art! You really got to the heart of the matter! Erin: Such a creative idea to make a 100th anniversary edition of the newsletter! Nice reference to great, great, grandparents Jack & Elizabeth!Love the Gowen artwork!

Koala-ty Watermelon Cookies
Ben: Wow, such a cool camping lesson! And for Dummies no less! Thanks for bringing awareness to Pink Ribbon Day, and especially for doing it in such a sweet way! The cake baker on your team is putting in some good work over the past two weeks. Great job! Makes me wish I was judging more than photos🍰🎂. Erin: Big fan of the Grinch to Carebear transformation for Gowen. I had no idea about that star trick! Very clever! Thanks for the reminder to be grateful for washing machines! A big thank you to Erin for being our guest judge this last week, and to Ben for judging every week and putting the time into wrangling the guest judges! It is always a fun surprise to see who it is going to be! I love the tradition of Erin judging the last week, a fantastic way to end Camp! But it is always sad when it ends too. CONGRATULATIONS TO COAL VALLEY CUTIES!! You are the winners of the 3rd annual Camp Hearties!

Thank you to all the Hearties who came out to camp this year! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your summer!

I hope you enjoy this week's entries! The teams did a great job at showing their love for Hope Valley Life!! I will turn it over to our judge, Ben Rosenbaum now.  Guest judge, Andrea Brooks, comments will be in purple.

Great job again this week, everybody! Your fun and effort are evident in every offering! I wish I had 10 points to hand out.

You Give Love A Plaid Name
Ben: Hot rhymes, Glen Plaid! I bet those were accompanied by some pretty tasty licks on your guitar! I dig it. Great references and integration of elements throughout! The Spider advice! Billy again! Wilma Lawson! I love that Brownie was able to pull 6 guests for a tea party, but Hickam could only hang with Glen—Hilarious! I think Lee is going to sell a lot of lumber with that new logo.
Andrea-Well done team! From the “nurse who loves children.” ;)

Sergeant's Riders

Ben:Well, this was a very informative tour of Hope Valley, a real trip down memory lane! Well done, Mountie Moose. The shepherd’s pie looks delicious, and everyone looks so happy to host a dinner with Hickam, how nice! HAHAHA poor Rip, but a very resourceful Faith! Such cute tea time for Brownie… or Brownie’s relatives? LOL ear protection for Elizabeth and the new baby!
Andrea:Fighting for a Hickman date? Hilarious!! I’m laughing out loud. This needs to actually happen on the show!

The WagonErs
Ben:Loved seeing those photo credits right off the bat! Way to bring in the larger Heartie community! I feel like everything the Wagon Master is telling me is a secret, because it looks like he’s winking at me. Nice tour, Theodore! Lovely artwork for Rosemary and Dottie’s shop, and Miss Priss certainly dressed to impress! It sounds like Brownie had a very nice time planning for and enjoying the tea party, and everyone was very pleasant to everyone! What an ideal world! Is that Log I see posing in your logo design for Lee? How nice of the Lumber Ladies to share him!
Andrea: I’m always a sucker for the pretty layouts!

Lumber Ladies
Ben: I was already chuckling at “just rolling through Hope Valley!” Log makes for a surprisingly good tour guide! Those sketches of dress designs with Log as the model are too much, so funny! I love the focus on the employees in Lee’s new logo! And such pretty bandaging by Faith, and very on brand for Hallmark! Those puns don’t quit! Way to go LL!
Andrea: Lumber Ladies are the winners of the group name competition, in my opinion! Also, I’ve always wanted to “row to school.”

Team PhotoBaumers
Ben: Great tag-line on Lee’s new logo! LOL I think Nurse Faith had a few too many margaritas before “bandaging” her cute little patient. I’m loving the emoji photo credits! And such a fun tour! ShutterBaum even risked his life to check out the pond in person, I’m impressed! Look at that period-appropriate bathing suit, very nice! I love all the design notes.
Andrea: A dress design! Love it! Very original! Also- Leland Logs? Funny and pertinent alliterations? Well done team!

Hope Valley Fans
Ben: That was a pretty thorough tour, from the outhouse to the stable! And speaking of thorough, Faith really went to town on that poor Raggedy Andy. Way to bring back Lee’s motorcycle for the logo, I like it! And placing all of your responses on top of a Hope Valley map is very fitting, nice presentation.
Andrea:Bravo for including the outhouse!! Hahaha.

Toasty Marshmallow Squad
Ben: Toasty is a pretty wise tour guide to promise food at the end of the tour, I think I’ll stick around! And now I’m hungry for chili and cornbread. This tour reminds me of the many dramatic events that have taken place just at the schoolhouse alone! Haha I love that Toasty is pointing out Opal and Brownie like celebrity sightings on the tour, very fun way to integrate the challenges! Love the Lori and Paul shout-out for the live stream. Jack Wagner has been giving them a run for their money recently though! Toasty is very busy on this tour, even completing some costume changes! LOL “And we’re walking… and we’re walking…”
Andrea:Live tweeting while you're on instagram is an absolute must!! Well played!

Hickam's Secret Service
Ben: Hahaha that new logo for Lee is great, and very big of Rosemary to allow the name “Squidget” to appear for all to see . Nice tour of HV, with lots of cute residents there! Check out the gift basket for the new baby, all the comforts of the modern age in… pink… hmmm… does Hickam’s Secret Service know something the rest of us don’t? Well that’s just the cutest first aid refresher I’ve seen, look at all those little woodland creatures! And of course… stay curious!
Andrea: Thanks for the nurse Faith shout out! I’m honoured to be pictured with my woodland friends! :)

Coal Valley Cuties
Ben: You’ve really highlighted the natural beauty of Hope Valley! Even on those cloud covered misty days it’s still beautiful. Everything about your Logo for Lee is great, I love seeing the before and after, and I love the conversation between the Coulters! So funny! And nice quote pull for the diaper tower with Rosie’s classic question about their contents! That cat with the bandage is hilarious! Looks like a very cooperative patient!
Andrea: I’ve always wanted to be toured around by a Mountie mouse! Love the word bubble idea!

Koala-ty Watermelon Cookies
Ben: Great dress designs! You’ll win that new designer job for sure! Nice use of plaid in the new logo for Lee! I love the creativity here in using other locations as stand-ins for Hope Valley, they look just as good! Look at that “Baby T” cake, how cute! Please tell me somebody on your team made that beautiful cake. Brownie managed to throw a very classy tea party. Well done!
Andrea: that might be the cutest teddy bear tea party I’ve ever seen. I also like your team name.. I see what you did there! ;)

The scores are so close! There is only two points difference between the 1st and 3rd place teams! Any team could pull forward for the win in week 4!

Camp Hearties 2018 Week 2

Week 2- HV Crossovers
Judged by: Ben Rosenbaum
Guest Judge: Pascale Hutton

Below are the tasks that the Teams had to choose from. It was a fun and twisted week here at Camp!

Ben's Brownie Points
Creativity- Coal Valley Cuties
Originality- Toasty Marshmallow Squad
Presentation- You Give Love A Plaid Name
Humor- Koala-ty Watermelon Cookies

Pascale's S'more Points
Creativity- Coal Valley Cuties
Originality- Team PhotoBaumers
Presentation- You Give Love A Plaid Name
Humor- Lumber Ladies

I want to start by thanking everyone for their support, loving words, and prayers for my family. It's hard when someone who was cut from the same cloth becomes threadbare. Hopefully with good care and rest, they will be on the mend soon!
Week 2 was a crazy ride, but ended on a smooth note. The teams were great with their TV Crossovers! I'm blown away every week by their creativity. So, without further ado, let me pass it over to our Judge, Ben Rosenbaum. Our guest judge this week is Pascale Hutton, her comments will be in purple.

Ben: It was very tough this week giving out the points, because everybody’s work was so creative, original, funny, and nicely presented! Good job to all the teams, and thank you for making these so entertaining to look at!

You Give Love A Plaid Name
Ben: Glen Plaid is back! And makes for an excellent guide: it all flows so nicely! I’m so impressed by how you tied it all together so well. After reading about Elizabeth’s altered timeline where she becomes a cook, Yost’s Yak Sak makes a very compelling case for Shark investment! And it was patently hilarious. Given all the “yaking” going on in this crossover I’m glad Glen could find some relief in aisle 4! Very fortunate! p.s. I’m still singing your team name in my head.
Pascale: so cleanly laid out. Very easy to spot the different challenges.

Sergeant's Riders
Ben: Your attempt to curry favor with me using a Hickam/Bachelor mashup for your poster is transparent… and totally working! I love it! Where did you find all the right dolls? Spooky stories are so much spookier when kids are involved! Rosaleen and the ghosts of the miners? Super spooky. That dessert pizza is really doing for me, especially if we deconstruct it and just eat the ingredients. I love your model of the Timeless Lifeboat! It’s tin-foil on a doggy chew toy or something? Very nice. My favorite line in the story was “The proposal is untouchable, so it goes on as we all know,” because even time travel better not mess with a favorite Hearties moment!

The WagonErs
Ben: The Wagoners I’m so spooked by the Lone Miner! And even more spooked by the Last Shift! Gotta say Hope Valley and WCTH as stuffed animals is very cute, I hope we aren’t all replaced in Season 6! It looks like Theo actually managed to Chopped his way to a pretty classic picnic before those pesky mice got involved. Is there anything Duct tape can’t do?! Seeing The peeking over his mouse trap is VERY funny.

Lumber Ladies
Ben: I can’t get enough of those log/wood/lumber puns throughout! Your Shark tank is very clever and funny, but I’m concerned that this could catch on as a fad diet for people too! Consider a warning label that it is not to be used on non-logs? Your Chopped sounds like lobster nachos with a very clever presentation and I am into that! I’d like to thank you, Lumber Ladies, for making Hickam your first choice for HV assistance! That Timeless mashup is guaranteed to work now! I’m glad Yost made it in there as a sponsor of the pickled egg/log rolling contest! That sounds pretty tough!
Pascale: Lego Mini Fig of Lee Coulter, complete with plaid pants was great!

Team PhotoBaumers
Ben:First things first: I was unaware that all this time I could have been calling brussels sprouts “petite cabbage.” That makes them much cuter. Lee’s Tinder account is hilarious! I guess he’s not lying if his pants are 30 years old! That’s a very elaborate Shark Tank proposal, I like that the chickens are running the whole operation, pickling eggs, exercising the chickens, and it all powers a victrola as well, what a triple threat! Lots of great specifics in your Urban Legend, I like all the bits with the kids. Hickam IS always glad you came, CHEERS to you!
Pascale: loved your name!!! And the Cheers spoof was very funny!

Hope Valley Fans
Ben: Wow, a whole soap opera mystery involving all of the challenges! I was wondering why there were so many cliff-hangers built into your responses… so I kept on reading! Poor Ned Yost was just trying to sell some eggs and got himself kidnapped?! By Mr. Jenkins?!?!?! Rip/Sherriff are now the law in town AND the guardian for Elizabeth’s babies?! Katie managed to pull off an actually appetizing chopped chicken noodle bowl with Honeybunny’s crazy shopping?!?! All so very dramatic. I’ll be tuning in next week.

Toasty Marshmallow Squad
Ben: Wow! Your Toasty mascot found love in Aisle 4, I didn’t see that coming! I’m very impressed by your MacGyver solution, that might double as a Yost Shark Tank invention too because I want to invest! But your “Spur of the moment” “Gallop-through dining” is too good so I’m glad we all got to see that too! Help me out here, because I’m not sure about Bill’s secret weapon blackened s’mores double shot—is it delicious or horrendous?! I need to know. Beautiful job with your poster of an Outlander/WCTH mashup! Somebody is pretty good with their watercolors!

Hickam's Secret Service
Ben: I’m glad to see Rip Bear is staying stealthy while indulging her sweet tooth! I don’t know if I’m more spooked or sad about the ghost horse, but I’m sure an encounter with it would leave me crying either way. I appreciate your PETA friendly approach to keeping the raccoons away! It also sounds like the elements of your “Raccoons be gone” reads exactly the same as the ingredient list for Bill’s chili! I like your outside-the-box take on a SURVIVOR cross-over, and just about anything is made better with a little Beyoncé in the mix. Your mashup poster will make a lot of #Hearties, #Chessies, and #Hallmarkies happy. Keeping it in the family! I also like that you snuck your tagline on there in the bottom right corner.

Coal Valley Cuties
Ben: Wow, YASSS When FRIENDS call the Heart! Very funny mashup put in the perfect context! Shepherd’s Taco Trifle TROUBLE! That Timeless crossover contains a secret dream I had for Hickam—that he would find his confidence as an actor (can’t imagine why)! Get out of my head, CV Cuties! I was really hoping for a paper clip or something in the MacGyver section and I got it! Nice work including the bobby pin and making a very practical solution! LOL Ned Yost’s Hair Tonic, yes I’ll Shark your Whale Oil. The before and after pictures and the warning to avoid flames cracked me up!
Pascale:The 'Friends' taco/Shepherd's pie trifle was a really creative mash-up.

Koala-ty Watermelon Cookies
Ben: Well hello Opal the Koala bear! Look at you stepping out in your little watermelon outfit! I couldn’t quite make out all the letters on the sign for aisle 4, so please tell me I’m right in thinking that “Cordial” is the first category of foods listed there! That’s delightful. I can’t tell you what a big fan I am of Ned’s Eggs. I’ll be your Shark! I think it would be an egg-cellent investment (please don’t sue me for using your trademark). I hate to admit how much I appreciate the emoji breakdowns of the timeless crossover (because I think that confirms my status as a millennial), but I really do like them. You are all legends (of tomorrow) in my book!

All the teams did a great job this week! Below are the scores for weeks 1 & 2. The extra point teams are allowed to earn from week 1 will be added in a separate blog that will showcase some of the extra work they did the first week! Looks like Love is also giving Plaid first place, but all the teams are close behind! Looks like a good race going into week 3!

See you on Sunday for more CampHearties fun!
